Do You Need an Italy Schengen Visa?

Answer 5 quick questions to find out your exact situation — and what to do next. Takes under 60 seconds.

Question 1 of 5
Understanding the Schengen Rules

Even if you don't need a visa, there are rules every American traveler to Italy must know.

🇺🇸 US Citizens — The 90/180 Rule

US passport holders can enter Italy and the Schengen Area without a visa for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This counts all Schengen countries combined — not just Italy.

🗓️ When You DO Need a Visa

  • Staying more than 90 days total in the Schengen Area
  • Traveling for work, study, or business beyond tourism
  • You hold a non-US passport without visa-free access
  • You hold a B1/B2 visa (must apply from home country)

📋 Which Consulate Do You Use?

You must apply at the Italian consulate that has jurisdiction over your US state of residence — not the nearest one. See the documents page for the full consulate map.

⏱️ Apply With Enough Time

Standard processing is 1–2 weeks from your appointment date. Factor in time to get an appointment slot (can take weeks) and document preparation. Start at least 3 months before travel.
